About Premium Grass Seeds
The Wirecutter of grass seed. Independent reviews backed by real data.
Premium Grass Seeds is an independent review site built by lawn care enthusiasts who got tired of the same generic advice. We research products obsessively, cross-reference performance data from NTEP trials, read every forum thread worth reading, and give you straightforward buying advice based on what actually works — not what pays the highest commission.
We built this site because we could not find what we were looking for: a single place that treats grass seed selection with the seriousness it deserves. Most review sites list 50 products with identical descriptions copied from Amazon. We curate the 15-20 seeds that are genuinely the best you can buy, explain exactly why they earned their spot, and make it dead simple to buy them. Think of us as the Wirecutter of grass seed.
Our Editorial Team
Premium Grass Seeds is led by Patrick Callahan, a lawn care enthusiast with deep experience in NTEP data analysis, cultivar research, and community-driven product evaluation. What started as a personal obsession with finding the best seed for a transition zone lawn turned into this site — because once you go down the rabbit hole of named cultivars and university trial data, you cannot help but share what you have learned.
Our team brings together hands-on growing experience, data analysis, and a genuine passion for helping people stop wasting money on mediocre seed. We are the friend who is way too into lawns and will tell you exactly what to buy — and more importantly, what to skip. Learn more about our team on the editorial team page.
Our Process
Every product on Premium Grass Seeds goes through a thorough research process before it earns a spot in our catalog:
- We verify specifications against manufacturer data and product listings
- We cross-reference performance claims with NTEP (National Turfgrass Evaluation Program) data where available
- We read community feedback on r/lawncare, The Lawn Forum, and other enthusiast communities
- We write original editorial reviews with genuine opinions — not rewritten product descriptions
- We test recommendations against real-world results reported by homeowners across different climates and soil types
How We Update Reviews
Our reviews are not a one-and-done affair. We update them quarterly to reflect new products, reformulations, price changes, and shifting community consensus. When new NTEP trial data is released, we re-evaluate every product that is affected — cultivar performance can change as new trial locations and years are added to the dataset.
We also incorporate community feedback directly into our reviews. When readers report consistently different results than our initial assessment, we investigate and adjust. Every product is scored on a 10-point scale based on three pillars: performance data (NTEP results, germination rates, disease resistance), value (price per pound relative to quality), and ease of use (availability, application simplicity, beginner-friendliness). No product gets a free pass — if it stops earning its rating, we change it.
How We Make Money
Premium Grass Seeds is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This is how we keep the lights on and continue producing independent reviews.
Importantly: affiliate commissions never influence our ratings or recommendations. We recommend what we genuinely believe is the best product for each use case, regardless of commission rates. Read our full affiliate disclosure for more details.
