Planting methods

Should you pre-germinate your grass seed?

Start with the seed you own. A documented soaking method can be an option, but coatings, mixtures and fertilizer carriers make the package instructions decisive.

Is it right for your seed?

Pre-germination starts the process in water before the seed reaches the lawn. It adds handling and scheduling decisions to a project that still needs a prepared seedbed and dependable watering. Our default recommendation is the product’s normal planting method; consider soaking only when the supplier supports it for that seed.

Plain seed, documented method

Confirm species, duration and handling instructions with the supplier before planning a soak.

Coated seed or combined product

Do not infer compatibility from the grass name. Ask whether soaking changes the product’s intended use.

Uncertain schedule or watering

Keep the seed dry until you can complete the planting and aftercare. A bucket is another task to manage.

Buy supplies for the method you will actually use

Milorganite’s instructions use a container and porous bag. The searches below are shopping starting points, not a tested kit or a requirement to buy every item. Check container size and bag openings against your batch. A pump and thermometer are separate decisions; neither establishes that a retail seed is suitable for soaking.

Bucket

5-Gallon Food-Grade Bucket

Choose a clean container sized for a manageable batch. Verify the material and dimensions of the actual listing.

Strainer Bags

Paint Strainer Bags (10-pack)

Check bag size and mesh openings: water must pass through while retaining your particular seed.

Carrier

Milorganite Fertilizer

Used as a carrier in its manufacturer’s method. Count its nutrients before deciding whether another fertilizer is needed.

Spreader

Broadcast Spreader

Verify compatibility with the intended material and calibrate before application. Collect test material instead of leaving it on paving.

Seed, establish, spread

Check these products against your planting plan

These are separate buying decisions. Start with the seed instructions, then decide whether your soil needs fertilizer and whether your spreader supports the material you intend to apply.

  1. Seed · check the current coating and planting directions

    Outsidepride Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass

The reviewed Midnight product has a coating. Our review does not establish permission to soak it; use its planting directions and ask Outsidepride before changing the method.

  2. Starter fertilizer · apply at seeding only when permitted

Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass

Decide from soil-test results and applicable phosphorus rules. Count nutrients from any fertilizer carrier before adding a separate starter application.

  3. Spreader · check material compatibility, then calibrate

Scotts Turf Builder EdgeGuard DLX Broadcast Spreader

This is a broadcast spreader for lawn materials. Do not assume a dry-seed setting or its stated coverage applies to a damp carrier mixture; follow its instructions and collect calibration material.

A documented method, with a clear scope

Milorganite publishes both homeowner and professional instructions. These are manufacturer guidance for a process using its fertilizer; they are not independent comparisons of soaking against conventional seeding.

  1. Prepare first. The homeowner method calls for a ready seedbed, weighed dry seed, a porous bag and a manageable container of room-temperature water.
  2. Follow one complete set of instructions. The professional method specifies darkness, 65–72°F surroundings, water changes every 12 hours and a three-to-five-day soak, with five days for Kentucky bluegrass. Check the particular seed’s instructions as that source requires.
  3. Drain and handle as directed. The homeowner instructions say to let the bag drip, without wringing it or allowing the seed to dry out. They propose four pounds of Milorganite per pound of dry seed as a spreading carrier.
  4. Check the fertilizer budget. We recommend reconciling that proposed carrier amount with the current fertilizer label and your soil recommendation before choosing the method. Do not add a starter by habit.

Pro Tip

A dry-seed spreader setting does not establish the setting for a damp mixture. Check material compatibility and calibrate with recoverable material before application; avoid leaving fertilizer on paving.

Species timing is not a retail-blend recipe

Milorganite singles out Kentucky bluegrass in its schedule. That does not give us a verified one-to-three-day tall-fescue schedule, a rule for staggering species, or permission to soak coated seed. For a premixed bag, follow that bag’s directions. Do not treat the first visible change in one species as proof that every component is ready.

For example, the current Outsidepride Midnight review describes coated Kentucky bluegrass. Read that product’s planting limits before borrowing a plain-seed process.

Avoid these planning mistakes

  • Buying a pump to rescue an uncertain process. The cited methods do not require a pump, and this guide provides no measured speed improvement for one.
  • Counting carrier as inert bulk. Milorganite contributes nutrients. Read its product guidance before combining applications.
  • Using a universal watering timer. Check the seedbed and adjust for rain, heat, soil and sprinkler output. Keep the establishment plan appropriate to the site.
  • Starting before the lawn is ready. Arrange site preparation and aftercare before soaking instead of relying on an improvised holding period.

Plan the work around the lawn

Before buying

Identify your grass, measure the area and decide whether conventional planting already meets the need. Check your soil-test recommendations.

Before soaking

Obtain product-compatible instructions, prepare the site and confirm that you can manage the complete process.

After planting

Monitor moisture and seedling development. University of Minnesota Extension recommends light, frequent irrigation after seeding, reduced as roots develop and adjusted for rainfall. Its calendar advice is regional, not a planting calendar for every state.

Questions before you start

Does Kentucky bluegrass have to be pre-germinated?

No. Use the seed package’s normal planting instructions unless you have a documented reason and compatible method for soaking that product. Our reviewed Midnight product is coated; its product review does not establish soaking compatibility.

How long should grass seed soak?

Milorganite describes a three-to-five-day process, with five days for Kentucky bluegrass. Those are instructions for its method, not a guaranteed schedule for every cultivar, coated product or mixture. Check the seed supplier’s instructions before starting.

Do I need an aquarium air pump?

The two Milorganite instructions linked here do not require one. We have not established a germination-time benefit for a particular pump or seed product, and a pump should not replace the prescribed water changes.

Can I soak a tall fescue and bluegrass blend together?

We have not verified a soaking schedule for each retail blend. Use the blend’s planting directions instead of assuming that separate species timings can be combined into one bucket schedule.

Can I use Milorganite as a carrier and also apply starter fertilizer?

Treat the carrier as a fertilizer application. Check its current label, your soil-test recommendation and applicable restrictions before adding another fertilizer. A carrier mixing ratio is not a nutrient recommendation for your lawn.
