Cool Season Species
Fine Fescue
Festuca spp. (umbrella group)
"Fine fescue" is the umbrella term for creeping red, Chewings, hard, and sheep fescue — needle-bladed, shade-tolerant, low-input cool-season grasses. Some labels only say "fine fescue" without naming the subtype; we tag products this way when the manufacturer does not disclose which fine fescue is in the bag.
Why Choose It
- Best shade tolerance of any cool-season group
- Very low water and fertilizer demands
- Soft, fine texture
Know Before You Buy
- Generic labeling — the exact subtype matters and is not always disclosed
- Poor traffic tolerance across the group
- Summer stress in hot, humid climates
Ideal For
Shade and low-maintenance blends in northern climates.
Blends That Include Fine Fescue
These products contain fine fescue as a supporting species. Where a real label states the percentage, we show it; otherwise it only prints on each lot's seed tag.
