Warm Season Species
Blue Grama
Bouteloua gracilis
Blue grama is buffalograss’s prairie companion — a native shortgrass famous for its eyelash-shaped seed heads. In lawns it appears almost exclusively in low-water native and xeriscape mixes, where it adds drought-proof density alongside buffalograss and sheep fescue.
Why Choose It
- Native shortgrass with extreme drought tolerance
- Handles poor soils and temperature swings
- Distinctive ornamental seed heads if left unmowed
Know Before You Buy
- Bunch-forming — used in mixes, not as solo turf
- Long dormancy and slow establishment
- Not a traffic grass
Ideal For
Native prairie and xeriscape seed mixes in the dry West.
