Pros & Cons
Pros
- BSR 121 — one of the most-purchased patch repair products on Amazon
- 3-in-1 (seed + mulch + fertilizer) is the correct approach for bare-spot repair
- Mulch layer retains moisture at the seed level, improving germination in disturbed soil
- Fast results — germination in 5-7 days under good conditions
- Purpose-sized for repairs: 10 lb bag covers up to 275 sq ft
Cons
- Sun + shade formulation only — not for bermuda, zoysia, or warm-season repairs
- Not for full lawn renovation — covers up to 275 sq ft, not large areas
- More expensive per pound than straight seed — you're paying for the mulch and fert components
Best For
Repairing bare spots and dead patches in cool-season lawns — up to 275 sq ft per bag, with germination in 5-7 days.
Decision Notes
Opinion
My read: Scotts PatchMaster Lawn Repair Mix Sun + Shade belongs on the shortlist only when the lawn problem is specific. Repairing bare spots and dead patches in cool-season lawns — up to 275 sq ft per bag, with germination in 5-7 days.
The case for it is BSR 121 — one of the most-purchased patch repair products on Amazon. The part I would not wave away is sun + shade formulation only — not for bermuda, zoysia, or warm-season repairs. I would rather buy a less glamorous seed or amendment that fits the site than force a premium product into the wrong soil, sun, or climate.
If you are comparing it with Scotts EZ Seed Patch & Repair Sun & Shade, do not start with the rating. Start with your zone, sun, soil, irrigation, and patience. Pick Scotts PatchMaster Lawn Repair Mix Sun + Shade when those conditions match the notes below; otherwise the alternative may be the more honest buy.
Pick It Over
- Pick Scotts PatchMaster Lawn Repair Mix Sun + Shade over Scotts EZ Seed Patch & Repair Sun & Shade when you need the repair use case and prefer its tradeoffs.
- Pick Scotts PatchMaster Lawn Repair Mix Sun + Shade over Scotts Turf Builder Rapid Grass Tall Fescue Mix when you need the repair use case and prefer its tradeoffs.
- Pick Scotts PatchMaster Lawn Repair Mix Sun + Shade over Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun and Shade Mix when you need the repair use case and prefer its tradeoffs.
Skip If
- - Your summers are Gulf Coast hot and humid with full-sun bermuda pressure; cool-season seed will struggle long term.
- - You are outside USDA zones 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or cannot match its partial shade requirement.
- - Sun + shade formulation only — not for bermuda, zoysia, or warm-season repairs
- - Not for full lawn renovation — covers up to 275 sq ft, not large areas
Five-Year Cost
Use the calculator below for a live estimate; the current product data is not structured enough for a five-year shortcut.
Plant Instead If
If you are in the Gulf Coast, Florida, or full-sun North Texas heat, look at bermuda, zoysia, Bahia, or buffalograss instead of forcing cool-season turf.
Our Review
PatchMaster is the right product only if the problem is small, cool-season, and obvious. I would use it for a dog spot, sprinkler washout, grub-damaged patch, or a dead dinner-plate area in a fescue/rye/KBG lawn. I would not use it to renovate a thin 2,000 sq ft lawn. The mulch and fertilizer are helpful for bare-spot work, but they also make the product expensive per square foot.
The best owner move is to fix the cause first. Colorado State's dog-urine guidance is blunt: the damage is concentrated nitrogen and salts, and water dilution is the real neutralizer. If the dog keeps using the same spot, PatchMaster is a repeat purchase, not a cure. For disease, compaction, or drainage, remove dead material, loosen the top soil, and correct the condition before spreading anything.
Pick PatchMaster over straight seed when the patch is small enough that moisture control is the whole battle. Pick regular tall fescue or sun/shade seed plus compost/topdress when the area is large. Pick Scotts EZ Seed Bermudagrass only when the existing lawn is bermuda. Do not use this in zoysia, St. Augustine, bermuda, or full deep shade. The 10 lb bag's up-to-275 sq ft claim means the $25-40 street price is roughly $90-145 per 1,000 sq ft equivalent, so convenience is the point.

What the Community Says
Common perspectives from the lawn care community
“Put down Scotts PatchMaster Lawn Repair Mix Sun + Shade last fall and the difference from my old lawn is night and day. The color alone makes it worth the premium over big box store seed.”
“I have a lot of mature oaks and was skeptical anything would fill in under them. Scotts proved me wrong. Not perfect, but way better than what I had before.”
“Perfect for someone who doesn't want to obsess over their lawn 24/7. Threw it down, kept it watered, and it came in thick without me babysitting it.”
