Its dial sets the clock, start time, duration and interval, with AUTO, OFF and a manual-watering function. Two AA alkaline batteries power the unit; the manual says they are not included.
This is a repeating hose-faucet control, not a controller with an unrestricted list of independent daily start times. Before buying, write down the watering pattern you need and compare it with the available choices. A clear display and automatic valve are useful only if those controls fit the job. That does not establish that six-hour spacing will keep every seedbed appropriately moist. If your conditions need closer or differently timed attention, this timer may not fit without manual intervention.[5][3]
Measure watering before programming it
A timer controls minutes, not inches of water or soil moisture. The same runtime can produce a different result with a different sprinkler setup or water supply. Minnesota's irrigation-audit guidance uses catch cans to measure distribution and average application rate, then relates the measured rate to an intended water depth.
Inspect the sprinkler's coverage before relying on the schedule. Check for leaks, low pressure and water missing the intended lawn section. Program from an observed setup and revisit it when conditions change. Neither a long runtime nor an automatic shutoff guarantees that the corners are wet enough or that a heavily watered area is avoiding excess. Use rain delay deliberately
Rain delay postpones watering for twenty-four, forty-eight or seventy-two hours when selected with the dial in AUTO. It is a user control, not evidence of an automatic rain sensor. Manual watering can run a separate one-to-240-minute cycle without rewriting the schedule. Both functions are useful when used with direct observation of the lawn.
OFF has a scheduling consequence worth knowing. The reviewed manual says turning to OFF resets the internal timing, clears rain delay or manual watering, and cancels that day's remaining scheduled cycles until the next programmed start. Do not casually switch OFF and back to AUTO expecting every later cycle that day to remain unchanged. Recheck the expected next watering after intervening.[5]
Plan the battery and cold-weather routine
Replace batteries when the low-battery icon appears. Orbit instructs users to remove them at the end of the watering season and fit new ones at the next season's start. Keep the filter washer clean and undamaged and maintain a properly seated battery tray. The housing's water resistance is not a claim that the timer can survive freezing; the manual explicitly warns of permanent freeze damage.
The single outlet controls one hose connection. Adding more sprinklers changes the water setup and still does not create separately scheduled zones. Check distribution again if that setup changes. For an unattended establishment plan, the important purchase question is whether the timer's actual controls and your inspection routine can meet the lawn's changing needs, not whether automation sounds convenient.[5][2][4][3]
